Blepharoplasty, also called eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is a procedure used to correct age signs in the eyelids. A blepharoplasty in White Plains, NY, at Alessi Medical Spa can alleviate a constantly tired, frustrated, or upset appearance. It involves the removal of extra skin, the tightening of sagging muscle tissue, and the removal and/or repositioning of fat.

What Can Blepharoplasty Treat?

Eye lifts can treat:

  • Puffy bags under the eyes
  • Sagging loose skin
  • Drooping muscle tissue
  • Fine eyelid wrinkles
  • Impaired vision resulting from drooping upper eyelids

Are You a Suitable Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Every surgical treatment has constraints that prevent certain candidates from going through the procedure. The best candidate for blepharoplasty is:

  • An individual who is in good health and has no medical conditions that could negatively affect the healing process
  • A non-smoker (or a person who is willing to quit smoking before the surgery)
  • A person who does not have any serious eye conditions
  • An individual who has a positive outlook towards life and realistic expectations regarding the results of the surgery

There are several reasons why your eyelids may be drooping. It may be caused by the relaxation of the forehead skin and eyebrows. In such cases, blepharoplasty is not an ideal treatment to improve the appearance of your eyes, and an endoscopic brow lift may be required. It is best to consult with Dr. Anthony Alessi to discuss the possible causes.

Your Consultation

Your treatment will start with a consultation with Dr. Alessi, who will determine whether you are an ideal candidate for the procedure. An examination of your eye area is conducted before preparing a treatment plan. Dr. Alessi will also discuss the procedure and give preoperative instructions to be followed thoroughly.

During this consultation, you and Dr. Alessi will determine which of your eyelids are in need of rejuvenation. In some cases, only the lower lids are rejuvenated, while in other cases, the only upper lids are treated. Sometimes, both sets of eyelids are addressed. This is known as quadrilateral blepharoplasty.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

This procedure is performed for correcting undereye bags, fine wrinkles, and puffiness in the lower eyelids. Because of age, your lower eyelids might droop down away from your eye or experience looseness (laxity). This can lead to your eyelid becoming wrinkled.

To perform the lower blepharoplasty procedure, the surgeon will make an incision either below the lash line (transcutaneous) or within the lid (transconjunctival). Then, he will remove or reposition the excess fat to reduce puffiness. Excess muscle and skin will also be removed as needed.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

During upper blepharoplasty, the surgeon removes the excess muscle tissue and skin that creates the appearance of droopy eyelids. As you age naturally, you will experience loose skin, drooping of the eyelids, and fine wrinkles. This procedure can reverse this, giving you a refreshed and youthful appearance.

In this surgery, the surgeon makes incision lines in the natural creases of the upper eyelids. Any excess skin contributing to a tired appearance or obstructing vision will be trimmed, and the muscles will be repositioned. The remaining skin will be lifted to create a more youthful look. The aim of this procedure is to ensure that you look revitalized.

Blepharoplasty Recovery and Healing

Once your eye lift procedure is complete, a friend or family member will drive you home, since you will not be able to drive immediately following the surgery. You will then be able to rest and recover.

A degree of minor swelling and bruising may be present for a time during recovery. Keeping your head elevated will help to alleviate these issues, as will application of a cold compress.
Since dissolvable sutures are used to close your incisions, there will be no need to have them removed. Follow-up appointments will be necessary to ensure proper healing.

Blepharoplasty Cost

The price of an eyelid lift varies from patient to patient based on their aesthetic needs and the specific details of their procedure. When it is a functional procedure to address obscured vision, its cost may be covered by health insurance providers. When it is purely cosmetic, price can be affected by factors like the techniques used and the total time required.
